Broken Earth Winery is back with two more limited release wines! What's that you say? More estate grown, single vineyard wines from a pioneering vineyard in Paso Robles and discounted almost $19 a bottle? Count us in!
We had great feedback on the Limited Release Syrah we previously offered and so today we are back with more wines that score even higher! But before we get to that, let's recap the fascinating history of the estate vineyard these wines come from.
Started in 1973, the founders (which included some big names from Hollywood) were some of the first to see the true potential of Paso Robles as well as to embrace the sustainability movement:
In 1973, Wayne Rodgers (Mash), James Caan (Godfather), Peter Faulk (Columbo), Jack Webb (Dragnet) and local visionary Herman Schwartz established our vineyard to be the first large scale vineyard on the Central Coast, planting 520 acres. They anticipated the growth of Paso Robles to be another 2,000 acres with 10-15 wineries over the long-term. Paso Robles now stands around 70,000 acres under vine, and over 300 wineries.
Farmers for generations have cultivated or “broken” soil in the region with care and respect. Vineyard pioneer Herman Schwartz embraced sustainable farming techniques as they were first coming on to the scene in the early 1980s. Our goal is to continue that tradition by respecting the land and its treasures.

Up first let's take a look at the 2019 Broken Earth Limited Release Tempranillo which spends 15 months in mostly new French and Hybrid (French oak heads and American oak staves) barrels. It received a score of 91 points from Wine Enthusiast. You will receive 2 bottles in today's 4-pack.
From the winery:
This wine is a native variety of Spain where it forms the backbone of the famous Rioja region in the north of the country. It is also grown in Portugal where it is known as Tinta Roriz and is utilised as one of the predominant varieties used in the production of Port. It’s name is a derivative of early in Spanish and it reflects its early ripening capabilities.
Broken Earth had some of the very early plantings of this variety in Paso and, although it was a tiny block, it encouraged us to plant much more in 2016. Block 5J is 15.09 acres of Clone 770 planted on 10’ x 5’ spacings and utilising simple vertical shoot position (VSP) for canopy management.
It is an active growing variety, as mentioned has the benefit of ripening earlier and provides a plush, ‘fleshy’ palate but with ample tannins to balance the fruit. The wine is quite aromatic and warrants a more obvious oak regime which utilises mostly new and some used barrels, with a mixture of French and Hybrid (French oak heads and American oak staves). Harvested at 24.5 Brix, and following a cool ferment, it spent 15 months in oak. The result is a wine that immediately captures your attention.
The fruit and oak combine wonderfully on the nose and this harmony continues through the palate. Brighter red fruits abound with great length of flavour and a balanced firm finish.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Broken Earth Limited Release Tempranillo opens with a savory, attractive, bright aroma of candied blackberry, black raspberry, cherry, lovely spice notes and more.
The medium-bodied wine tastes smooth, fresh and balanced with similar flavors to the nose and well integrated spice. It's full of sweet fruit flavors despite being very dry with less than 2 g/L of residual sugar. It's both very flavorful and full of complexity and we love it.
It ends dry, long and a bit grippy on the savory finish and was even a bit better on day 2. This is a really nice example of Tempranillo.

From the winery:
Malbec is a prolific variety and the vines were both shoot and fruit thinned to guarantee a balanced, ripe crop. Our Malbec grapes were delivered on October 23, 2019. We received about 30 tons of Malbec from our estate vineyard. The fruit was crushed, destemmed, and sent to tank. We added tartaric acid to the must due to the very high pH. BDX yeast was used to inoculate the must. Two pump overs were done daily turn over the fruit and help with the ferment.
Fermentation took place at 23.0 Brix on skin for 16 days at 61F. The wine was transferred to barrel and left for 11 months for maturation. Barrels were individually selected for bottling (50% new French Oak and 50% older American hybrid barrels). Resulted in a finished wine with 14.9% alcohol and 3.0g/L residual sugar.
Our Malbec is a peppery, dark red wine with dark red fruity notes on the palate and a balanced acidity. It pairs great with barbecued meats, lamb shanks, and roasted bell peppers.

And now on to our review:
The 2019 Broken Earth Limited Release Malbec unleashes lots of fresh and Sweet Tart like fruit on the nose, including plum, blackberry, red berries and more. Licorice, cedar, spice and some floral notes all make an appearance as well. It's quite a succulent start.
Tasting the medium-bodied wine shows great flavor and a sneaky depth to it - it tastes light and easy at first sip but then you realize it also has a wonderful depth to it. With very well integrated spice throughout, this is excellent.
It ends dry, juicy and a bit grippy on the very long and dynamic finish. It gets even better as it has more air too and was similar on day 2.
